YUMI: Yumi Baby Food Delivery has launched in Chicago!
/
Have you heard of Yumi baby food? This new to us baby food delivery service provides freshly made, healthy, meals delivered weekly!
(Hold the eye rolls please, food delivery is the wave of the future and I was never one to make my own baby food and save in ice cube trays. More power to you if that’s your jam!)
First, let me say, I have to admit I was skeptical that Oliver would enjoy the flavors in our Yumi delivery. As much as I would consider my own palette to be relatively sophisticated… the kids on the other hand are VERY familiar with the ole chicken nugget and Mac n’ Cheese dinner item. That being said, we do regularly give the kids bites of our food and let them explore different tastes so I was nervous but I could see it going either way.
Oliver isn’t exactly a picky eater, but he has been known to chuck a food item across the dining room if he feels moved to do so, so I made sure to remain nimble during this food experiment.
We aren’t new to food delivery services for the older kids (See our review of Yumble) but I have only tried one other baby food delivery company. Back when Oliver was strictly on purees it was very convenient to have a box of healthy baby food delivered once a week. There is just something a little unsettling about how long grocery story baby food can remain on the shelf. If it’s all natural why isn’t it growing mold sooner?
At any rate, I wish I had discovered Yumi earlier because not only do I love the convenience of food right to my doorstep, I also love that I can trust the source and trust the food to be truly healthy since I for one, am no expert at creating healthy meals from scratch. Especially for babies!
This first box we received was through a collaboration with local chef Beverly Kim of Parachute & Wherewithall. A mom of three AND a chef helped create this box’s menu and the meals are inspired by traditional Korean recipes! I think it is so cool that a local chef designed the menu for our youngest tot and that we can also physically go to her restaurant when we want to enjoy a date night! It’s the greatest combination and supports local which I am a big advocate of. (Especially when we are talking about a mama owned business!)
Our menu:
Hobak Pat Juk
Kabocha squash, Adzuki beans, apple, dates, ginger powder, and cinnamon
Cubano Bites
Banana, spinach, black beans, garlic, green banana flour, sweet potato, and sunflower oil
Beet Puffs
Broccoli Lentil Bites
Lentil, Broccoli, Red Onion, Dates, Garbanzo Flour, Ground Flax Seed, Lemon, Ras-el-hanout Spice Blend
These are packed with calcium, vitamin K, protein, B vitamins, and B6
Pizza Bites
Onion, Mushrooms, Lentils, Thyme, Gluten-Free Oats, Gluten-Free Oat flour, Garlic, tomato paste, Tomato Powder, Ground Flax, Basil, Sunflower Oil
The Hobak Pat Juk and Broccoli Lentil Bites are the items specifically from the Beverly Kim collab and honestly, the Broccoli Lentil Bites ended up being Oliver’s favorite! I hear this is a version of one of the beloved items on the Parachute menu so that makes complete sense.
Overall, the bites and super food beet puffs were definitely the front winners. He’s in a stage where he loves to feed himself and I think that’s why he preferred the self feed items. He seemed to enjoy the Hobak puree, but he really despises me feeding him anymore so there were some battles over the spoon. Cue mommy clean up duty!
When you receive your shipment you will have to place most of the items in the freezer or fridge. Since. this is actually fresh food, it will go bad if not preserved correctly or eaten within a week. But shouldn’t this be true of most all natural baby foods? Don’t get me wrong, we are long time consumers of the Gerber baby food on the grocery store shelf, but it did have me wondering about how healthy the preservatives are that keep that food from going bad….
Although we were gifted this box in exchange for a review, this is really Oliver’s review! And I think the pictures say it all, he loved it!
