Fall Family Fun

Last weekend the kids and I truly enjoyed ourselves at the Upper Arlington Fall Festival. It was so much fun and it helped ring in my favorite time of the year. Fall brings the PERFECT weather, crunchy leaves underfoot, Halloween (best holiday ever), pumpkin and apple eeeeeverythaang, and gorgeous multi-colored leaves. Considering my main obsession is going on fun, outdoor adventures with the kids, what better time of year than fall to do them in!

Its almost the middle of October but if you haven't made your way to the pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and festivals yet, here are some awesome resources from our friends at Columbus Moms Blog and What Should We Do Today Columbus. The tough part is choosing which ones to go to!!

My Biggest Blogging Mistakes

Blogging is such a popular platform these days. People start blogs to promote their businesses, charities, personal stories, offer advice, promote a lifestyle brand, etc. On the surface it seems like such an easy venture. I mean, how is blogging different than the Xanga and LiveJournal I had back in high school? Turns out, it can be a lot more than you bargained for.

When I began A Mommy Nearest, I believed that I would just knock out one blog per week while I was up all night breastfeeding. Somehow, magically, people all over would appreciate my sage, motherly wisdom and provide a consistent reader base. Boy was I wrong. So here are my five BIGGEST mistakes that will hopefully help any of you new bloggers out there get started on the right track!

  1. Design, logo, name

You really need to think long and hard about your preferred blog aesthetic. I went from over the top feminine to a more editorial and sleek look. The original design and logo were not representative of me or my blog posts and left the whole feel very disjointed. That will do nothing to attract readers. Launching a blog too quickly often leads to mistakes like these. Its okay to learn through trial and error but it doesn't hurt to make decisions and then sit with them for a few days before releasing to the World Wide Web. It goes without saying that you will also need a platform you are comfortable with. I use Squarespace and love all the template options. Obviously Wordpress and Blogger are popular options as well.

P.S. When thinking of your website title, make sure the domain name is available first! You can purchase your domain name through your hosting platform if you choose to go that route.

       2. No iPhone photos please!

High quality photography and content are a MUST for a successful blog. Don't get me wrong, phones can take amazing pictures these days. If they are really clear and aesthetically pleasing, then go for it. However, investing in a DSLR or mirrorless camera could be of huge benefit to your blog. Especially for food blogs, promoting some type of product, and fashion. High quality photography will also capture attention on your affiliated social media accounts. If you are so excited about the topic that you are inspired to write about it, make sure the pictures do it justice. The literary content also needs to be top notch. Churning out regular, high quality content is still something I am having trouble keeping up with. Sporadic posts make it hard to maintain subscribers and an interactive fan base.

     3. Bloglovin'

Interact with other bloggers! Comment on blogs that you follow, interact on their social media, have guests post on your blog and be a guest writer on theirs. Find some blogger link ups and blogging communities you can get involved in. Link parties are a great way to gain blog traffic and for the blogger community to support each other's posts. If you want to start your own, you can use a service like InLinkz to get started! Send emails out to all the bloggers you know (or don't know) asking them to contribute, promote the link party (pick a theme like interior design for example), and you're all set! Some blogging communities that I've been using to get my posts out are BlogEngage, StumbleUpon , and Medium. You are essentially sharing your posts with a commmunity that actually cares about your content, you can interact with each other, and hopefully get some shares and drive more traffic to your site.

4. Get organized!

I was terribly disorganized when I first started out. Heck, I still am. I have only recently discovered the more efficient ways of promoting my blog. Apps like Hootsuite help me schedule my social media posts so I can post the recommended 2-3 times/day at the most ideal times (afternoon and evening) and still have a life. It's best to set aside a section of time in your week and dedicate that time to preloading all the blog posts and images you want to put out for the next few days. Then you won't even have to think about it again until the next week.

  5. Don't get caught up in the hype!

Yes, all the above items are important to a successful blog. But there is no point in running yourself ragged, stressing over followers and likes, for something that a lot of you may have just started as a hobby. Yes, many people make money off their blogging through affiliate marketing, but it can be nominal and you beginners certainly won't be raking in the dough anytime soon. Write what you enjoy, do your best to make your site appealing to whatever niche you are aiming for, and get to know other bloggers in the community so that you can promote each other's work. That's what most important. Any product endorsements or monetary benefits that may follow are just icing on the cake!

1st stop Goldfish, 2nd stop ... Olympics!

image.jpg

Our family is no stranger to boutique, swim class franchises. Back in Wisconsin we utilized a similar swim class facility for my oldest and really enjoyed our time there. Moving to Columbus we were thrilled to find some of the same characteristics in Goldfish Swim School. My needs were basic. All I was looking for was warm water temperature and small class sizes. Easy enough. Goldfish provided all that and more.

Originally I had low expectations for baby/toddler swim lessons. It's very important to me that my children feel comfortable in water and eventually become confident swimmers but, I certainly wasn't expecting a miniature Michael Phelps after a couple of sessions. This was just supposed to be a fun activity, first sport, and introduction to a basic life skill. Right?

Wrong. (Hold on to your seats while I get slightly hyperbolic) We began swim classes at Goldfish back in April for my eldest son and daughter. It is now August and my son has jumped TWO levels and well on his way to Junior 4. Weekly, I am watching behind the glass with tears in my eyes as if I am watching him win the 100m freestyle. I can barely put into words how amazing it is to watch my four year old swim underwater. In less than 6 months he has gone from just playing in shallow water to swimming 10 feet underwater, diving for rings, and rolling over onto his back to float. I watch with awe every. single. week. How is this possible? Is he a swim prodigy?

Olympics here we come!

Olympics here we come!

After backtracking and actually researching the values and goals of Lisa Armitage and the Goldfish Swim School franchise, it all started to make sense. The breath control, "pulling paddles," rolling over onto their backs, these are all skills that are honed from the baby classes all the way up. They are worked on in tiny increments and gradually each student can hold their breath longer, and swim farther. The same skills that my four year old is mastering, I can see tamed down versions of in my two year olds Mini 3 class.

Listen, I know I'm going to be a tiger mom no matter what sport or interest comes our way next. But every child needs to learn how to swim and you can't beat the learning environment over at Goldfish swim school. They have two locations in the Columbus area, Dublin and Westerville, and you can choose sessions or year round swimming. (I recommend the year round.) Check them out, don't just take my word for it, and you too will be pressing against the glass (sorry about the fingerprints) cheering your mini Phelps to victory.

Surviving Disney with Baby & Toddler!

image.jpg

How many times have you heard, "Wait until your kids are older before you take them to Disney"? Or just generally thought that the struggle to go wouldn't be worth it? There are many that criticize bringing younger children to Disneyworld, but rest assured, Disney will make even the smallest guests feel welcome! As we are preparing for our first trip with young children this fall, I have discovered some tips to set a parents mind at ease when grappling with the fear of how to navigate the happiest place on earth with children that are preschool aged and under.

www.yourfirstvisit.net is an awesome resource for this type of stuff!

www.yourfirstvisit.net is an awesome resource for this type of stuff!

  • Get to the park early
    • Hit up Fantasy Land as soon as the park opens and enjoy some reprieve while this area isn't super busy yet. Fantasy land has the largest number of rides for toddlers!
  • Work with a Disney planner! They are completely free, answer all your questions (big or small), book your meal reservations, character meals, book specialty add ons, and find the best deals before anyone else!!! Cheryl Popoutsis is ours and she has the experience of being a lifelong Disney vacationer and goes there every year. You can't beat her knowledge and experience and she has made the planning process exponentially less stressful. It's like having a wedding planner you don't have to pay for! The best way for a stress free planning experience.
  • Get a babysitter, parents need fun too!
    • If you aren't lucky enough to have grandparents tag along for help, Disney offers in room child care services and childcare activity centers!

All in all, Disneyworld is an overwhelming place. And if you are only ever going to go once in your life, waiting until your children are older is probably a good idea. But if you want to make this magical location a destination you go back to time and time again, just remember that you aren't going to fit everything in. Enjoy what the parks have to offer for the different stages your children are in, and watch their eyes light up each and every time. With toddlers specifically it seems best to stay on sight, go back for naps, cool off in the baby care centers, and just enjoy what they can enjoy for now. Vacations are always the best when you don't push yourself too hard and that is something I have to remind myself time and time again. Making an itinerary with your Disney planner is a good way to ensure that you aren't overwhelmed by all the options and figure out what rides you just have to go on before you even get there.

Big Machines @ COSI

As I'm writing this, there is only one more day left of the Big Machines exhibit at COSI. Hopefully enough of you see this in time that you run down there tomorrow and check it out. Give it the send off this awesome exhibit deserves.

After the week I had, I really had no designs on heading downtown for any reason. But there was something about this exhibit that kept nagging at me, and I thought we just had to check it out before it left for the year. And boy am I glad we did! The kids had a blast and I had a blast watching them. I had no idea that they were going to be able to climb up and control actual equipment! This is every kids dream when they pass a construction site. The "Touch A Truck" events are always awesome, but this exhibit just stepped it up 1000 notches.

Maybe you will read this in time, maybe you won't. But it's important to know just how awesome this museum is and to get on their email list and keep tabs on the visiting exhibits. Currently they have an awesome video game exhibit (Game Masters) that the kids loved and would also make an amaaaaazing date night. Not to mention the new CityView Patio is open!!!! (Video games, scenic view, and drinks = ideal date night)

City View Patio hours of operation are 5pm to 10pm on June 17, 24, July 8, 15, 16, 29, 30, August 5, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27, and September 2, 3, 2016.

A Birthday Party with the Columbus Zoo

Yes, I admit it. I'm one of those moms that tries to go all out for their children's birthday parties. I know many people find it ostentatious but we are not a family that hosts get togethers and parties other than for birthdays. It's a way to get all the family and friends together and it just so happens to surround a birthday. It's one (well, three) day(s) a year that we get to make the children that I longed for so greatly, feel extra special.

Now there are definitely levels to the birthday party "madness." I like to consider myself flying somewhere in between the average birthday bbq and the gold plated wonderland style. That being said, it is still so time consuming scoping Pinterest and Etsy for unique decorations and party ideas.

This year I went the laid back easy route and it was amaaaaaazing. For Sebastian's 4th, we held his party at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. I could not have been more impressed and it was so stress free! I actually got to enjoy the party for once and see my son having fun. Sometimes you miss the precious moments when you run around and try to ensure perfection that you can't ever achieve. The volunteers took care of absolutely everything from organizing and running the children's activities, to serving the guests food, drinks, and dessert. I truly did not have to lift a finger! The kids had an amazing time, our out of town guests got to experience a Columbus gem, and I threw my FIRST stress free birthday party. (Priceless).

So here are the deets:

  • Ideal age is 4-12
  • Party takes place in the air-conditioned Education Building.
  • Packages include parking and all day admission for all your guests (Max 50) , printable invites, birthday cake (if you choose, I made my own cupcakes), punch & water.
  • Themes are Pirates, Safari, and Party With a Purpose where the child can take donations to a charity or adopt an animal in lieu of gifts! (Although we ended up with both gifts and donations)
  • Add ons include pizza, fruit tray, veggie tray, party favors, character ambassador, upgrade to the special Jack Hanna animals, and ride wristbands / ride tickets

All in all, I would recommend this location to anybody searching for a fun and easy birthday party idea. Give your son or daughter an adventure to remember. Make to sure to reserve at least three weeks in advance if not more!

North Market & Mothers Day Weekend

This past Mothers Day weekend we skipped the breakfast in bed and crafts and opted for some fun family activities. Lucky for us Saturday was Free Comic Book Day! (It's always the first Saturday in May each year) We chose Packrat Comics in Hilliard and had a wonderful time. Not only free comics but inflatables, photo ops, games, food, artist meet and greets. We were blown out of the water and my 4 year old son has been talking about comics ever since. It also gave us an opportunity to see the amazing things a local business in our community has to offer and we will definitely be back.

Stimulate your child's love for reading and celebrate one of my favorite story telling mediums, comics. There's a much wider selection than just superheroes and for some children, this is one of the only things they can get excited about reading. Free comic book day may be over but I bet they have a lot of these freebies still hanging around the store so here's a run down on all the free samplers that were released this past weekend from one of favorite journalists, Glen Weldon. (Hint: click on hyperlinked name)

Sunday we hit up North Market to grab some tasty eats and then let the kids run out some energy at Goodale Park

North Market was established in 1876 and features 35+ vendors. You can shop for flowers, meat, fish, produce, specialty items, and my favorite, pastries. Not to mention eat at all the amazing food stalls. We just have to keep going back again and again so that I can try everything there is to eat there but, considering the crowd, we went with our tried and true favorites. Hot Chicken Takeover for lunch and Pistacia Vera and Jeni's Ice cream for dessert. We enjoyed it, the kids enjoyed it. You have to go, and you have to take the kids because they will be entranced by all the colors, smells, people, etc. Just go, and go again. And again.

Scioto Audubon Metro Park

At this point we have only explored 3 of the 16 metro parks Columbus has to offer and I am constantly knocked off my feet at each one. When we moved here I never would have guessed this city had so much to offer in the way of family activities and bringing nature into an urban setting. We have not traversed our way through all 16 parks yet but this one has got to be the most urban park of them all. With a freeway on each side and located in the Brewery district of downtown Columbus, this park is a nature oasis! A very unexpected spot amidst all the hustle and bustle. This park is on a peninsula stretching into the Scioto River and contains many wetland areas where you can use their telescope to observe turtles, frogs, big fish, and all sorts of wildlife. Great for kids but also for people of all ages.

The three trails are easy with Scioto Greenway and Connector being the best for hiking, biking, and pets. Rent a COGO bike and take in the breathtaking scenery and great view of the city. Grab some friends and rock climbing equipment and scale the 32 ft. climbing wall, or start up a game of sand volleyball. (They also offer classes so you can learn to climb and where they provide the equipment!)

Just here to exercise? Not only can you bike or run the trails but there is a great obstacle course and outdoor gym of sorts. And don't keep the dogs or kids at home because there is a great dog park that is separated into 2 areas by breed size and they each have their own agility course.

The kids can explore a new-age playground that has to be one of the coolest playgrounds I have ever seen. Not to mention preschool story time at 10 a.m every Thursday and Saturday morning at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center's library. Don't leave without seeing the indoor play place aka Forest Room that the kids can run, play dress up, and climb. The play place opens right up to an observation deck overlooking a wetland and don't miss the sandbox around the corner! (I know my kids sure didn't, *groan*)

How to Explain the Meaning of Easter to Kids

Depending on your religious preference, Easter can mean so many things to so many people. The ringing of a new Spring season or celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Or both! It is absolutely one of my favorite times of the year and I certainly don't need to search my brain for new and fun activities for the kids because Easter is chock full of wonderful events and celebrations in just about every community.

If you are a part of a church community Easter can be such a special time for kids when they go all out with fun activities that they both enjoy and learn from. Sometimes the meaning of Easter can be a hard subject for little kids because it brings up themes like death and well, torture really. Some pretty dark stuff. At the same time, you may not want to keep Easter as something that is all about bunnies either. It certainly can be a complicated conversation but some great tips are to just explore some major themes and connect that with the themes of spring. Death and rebirth, brokenness and healing, sin and salvation. All the new budding flowers and plants coming up are a great way to explain the comings of spring and the true meaning of Easter. The idea of new life is a major theme of Easter and in my opinion, is the easiest to understand for small children.

Pretty cheesy bunny, but kids love him right?

Pretty cheesy bunny, but kids love him right?

Before you discount the Easter bunny as being pagan foolishness, the mammal is an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. There it is again, new life. The bunny, new life, spring, it all ties in. What about those Easter eggs the bunny supposedly delivers? Some say Easter eggs represent the emergence from the tomb / resurrection. Decorating eggs also dates back to the 13 century where people would decorate this formerly, Lenten -forboden food during Lent and then eat them on Easter as part of the celebration.

I'm no Rechenka so we rolled our eggs in cool whip and food coloring :)

I'm no Rechenka so we rolled our eggs in cool whip and food coloring :)

In other cultures, Easter involves some darker and more serious traditions, But the underlying theme seems to still be a welcoming of the spring season and a purification of the body and soul. Sometimes modern culture seems to water down the original traditional celebrations but if you just take some time to meditate on what this holiday really means and represents to you, you can soon find an explanation for your children that can mean more than a basket full of toys and candy.

And if you are not Christian, or not religious at all, spring is still something to celebrate! For us Midwesterners who have been stuck in the winter doldrums, we can finally enjoy the outdoors again and if that isn't a reason to go out and do fun, spring related activities, I don't know what is.

St. Patrick's Day With The Kids

I suppose I should probably rename this blog and go with something like ... "Last Minute Mom" since you can be sure the kids and I won't do any themed crafts or snacks until the night before or the morning of. But what this means for you is that everything I whip up can be done with items you may already have around the house or with just a quick trip to the store. Working second shift, I only have the morning to really hang out and do fun activities with the kids so everything seen here was able to be completed in just a few hours during our morning together. This morning in fact!

When you are done crafting, head out to the driveway, break out the sidewalk chalk, and decorate it with shamrocks and anything green! Great distraction while the crafts dry and eating messy snacks outside is always a treat. Not to mention less clean up for mom.

Top off off your afternoon or evening with a fun Leprechaun themed movie or maybe read about the real St. Patrick and use the holiday to learn about a new country!

Columbus Museum of Art

How does your family spend Sundays? If it's not at the Columbus Museum of Art then it's time to take a second look my friends. The newly renovated Columbus Museum of Art is a wonderful family outing and you can't beat that fantastic price of free.99 !! Yes folks, admission and parking is free on Sundays. Does that make the museum more crowded than normal? Yes. But does that make taking young children to an art museum more tolerable? Definitely, yes. They will actually blend in quite well with all the commotion and all the visitors know what they are in for when arriving on Sunday. I'm definitely not condoning letting your minions run wild (this is a museum after all) but I am saying that it makes the whole experience less stressful knowing that your toddler isn't the lone echo in a silent cave of fragile objects.

As new transplants to the Columbus area, we did not have the pleasure of visiting the museum pre-makeover but the difference is obvious. Modern vs classic. The back entrance is vibrant and open and may remind you of the Apple store in the bright, airy, nature of the space with pops of color. On either side of the back entrance is the gift shop and the Schokko Art Cafe run by Cameron Mitchell. (Kids menu for the win!)

The children's area on the first floor is magnificent. I love that such a cool space like this exists in the midst of what many consider to be a more formal, adult specific, attraction. There is a cute treehouse, costume dress up area, and multiple stations to create your own art and stretch the imagination. This is a space for all age groups from toddler to teen.

I have heard wonderful things about the rotating exhibits (Lego, Chihuly, etc) but for our excursion I strapped the kids in the stroller and toured the standing exhibits. I asked the kids what they saw in each picture and what colors they noticed. It will be so interesting to hear how those answers will change and become more insightful as they age. That is what makes this particular Columbus attraction a definite repeat for us for years to come.

It is a major plus that going on our "adventures" saves our living room from being destroyed, but much more important is the opportunity to stimulate the little minds of which I have been blessed to have charge. Balance is everything and yes, my kids love their movies and toys, but they also love going to new places, seeing new things, and having new experiences. Art is going to have to be a part of their childhood because that creativity is surely going to boil over into other parts of their life and hopefully their future.

We will definitely be visiting in the next couple weeks to celebrate spring with "Art in Bloom."

Until then…. "Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure." - J.K. Rowling

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

As today was another near 60 degree day in Columbus, we decided to go check out the bison at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. I had heard about them from a few people and thought it was a pretty unique experience for the kids to see bison roaming about in a city park. To my surprise, this park has so much more to offer than that! I thought the three hour time allotment we had would be plenty but now I know we barely even scratched the surface of what the kids and I could experience there. We will certainly be coming back time and again, throughout every season.

First stop, checking out the Overlook near the Cedar Ridge entrance and picnic area.

First stop, checking out the Overlook near the Cedar Ridge entrance and picnic area.

We entered and parked at the Cedar Ridge Entrance and basically explored all that we could from that starting point. This is a 7,000 acre park so I am sure that we just skimmed the surface and I will make sure to amend / update this post as we experience more and more of this amazing park.

First thing I noticed were all the picnic areas and the three playgrounds. The playgrounds were also the first things the kids noticed! The playgrounds also seem to vary in order to separate younger age groups so that was nice. We took the short path to the Overlook area and that was a nice introduction to how beautiful and vast this area is. Pretty rocky path, but my stroller handled it very well. I think it would be pretty difficult with a little umbrella stroller however.

The next trail we found was the Cobshell. Since we were exploring without a map I did not realize that this was considered a moderate hike in regards to difficulty and the gravel, hilly trail definitely pushed my limits of stroller pushing comfort. Beautiful trek through the woods and connects to the scenic overlook of Big Darby Creek.

The most comfortable trail with the stroller was Darby Creek Greenway. Very wide to allow for people, strollers, and dog walkers. It is a flat trail through the prairies and woods and intersects the two bison pastures. The kids were very excited to see the bison even though it was from a far distance. We can't wait to go back and catch them roaming a little closer. Near the bison area is also a fantastic Nature Center that you will have to struggle to drag your kids out of. A 53 ft. living stream flows through the exhibits and there is also a stage, puppets, books, and activities. We haven't checked out there preschool events they sometimes have in the mornings, but I am definitely anxious to. The next one is called Eagles and is being held March 8th at 9:30 and 11:00 am.

The kids were obsessed with all the dogs they saw on the trail and we had a lot of opportunities to practice our dog etiquette. Essentially trying to get them to ask the owners if they are allowed to pet, and not just blatantly running up to a dog squealing. Still a work in progress on the squealing. And that is another great thing about this park are all the trails you can bring dogs on. Here is the link to the trails so you know ahead of time which ones are pet friendly.

The most exciting thing about the move to Columbus has been exploring all of these great metro parks and I can't wait to experience them more and more as the weather gets nicer. Not to mention the fact that a day outside saves the living room from being demolished! :)

Tips to Increase Milk Supply

Spoiler alert! If you are grossed out by the idea of breastfeeding and breast milk, this post is soooo NOT for you. Feel free to kick rocks and reconvene on my next blog post. But for the rest of you mothers out there who are struggling to breastfeed or pump for as long as possible, I hope I can offer some advice on what my process has been like.

Probably the most important thing I have learned about trying to increase your milk supply, is that every woman is different. Some of the tips I have read have really not worked for me at all, and some have worked great. I should start off by saying that I had no issues with milk supply with my first two children. With my second child I had an abundance of milk and was able to stash a vast amount in the freezer. So imagine my disappointment when baby numero tres rolls around and I am pumping out a measly 2 oz every 3-4 hours. I mean, it was that bad. One thing I have decided is that starting off with a good plan from the get-go is majorly important. My most successful bout of breastfeeding / pumping was a direct result of pumping the rest of my milk after every feeding when my second was a newborn. A lot of women produce more with their additional children and it can be more than your tiny newborn can take. Instead of letting your body produce less, since the baby needs less, keep pumping and producing and build up a stock that will have you running out and buying a chest freezer.

But what do you do when life has gotten in the way and your milk supply dwindles? This is especially exasperating when you have gone back to work and you have to try to pump to keep your supply up but have to schedule it during breaks, simultaneously cram food in, and clean parts. In my personal experience, I cannot pump often enough to mimic how often I would be feeding my baby if I were at home all day. I am comfortable supplementing with formula to ensure that she never gets hungry and she also benefits from the vitamins and nutrients that formula is chock full of (and that my diet is probably lacking). However, at the very least I wanted to keep it about 50/50 and that meant upping my production. Keep in mind that I am not an official lactation consultant but here is what worked best for me.:

  1. Water
  • The number one most important aspect of milk production is staying hydrated. For some this may be a given but I hate drinking water. I don't know what it is but I just can't stand it. The best reminder is chugging a jug of water each time I pump. And for a soda replacement, I discovered these ICE drinks that actually taste great and just like soda but are really flavored, sparkling water. Slamming Gatorade is also a reasonable choice if you are getting sick of plain water. Every time I am intentional about my H2O intake, I always see an increase in milk.

     2. Oatmeal

  • Many people swear by oatmeal increasing milk supply and although I am not sure that this is backed by scientific evidence, it does seem to work. If for no other reason than the fact that you are increasing your calorie intake and eating more is definitely going to boost milk production. Between balancing work and the kids I have been having a really hard time eating and drinking water often enough throughout the day. So what meals I can fit in should be chock full of good stuff for you and baby. Oatmeal works perfectly for this. Quick and effective.

    3. Supplements

  • Fenugreek and Brewers Yeast.
    • I did not see a noticeable increase after Fenugreek alone. I took it both in pill form and tried to drink the Mother's Milk tea. I really could not muster the strength to make it through the whole mug but if you are a tea person, the tea might be a good option for you. I did experience the side effect of smelling like maple syrup which is supposed to be a sign that it is working but, like I said, no noticeable increase. I know that other people swear by it so I would not count it out as an option.
    • I did notice an increase in milk supply after the Brewers Yeast pills. I am not a beer drinker but supposedly a glass of beer also gives a similar physical response. You can also get it in powdered form and make oatmeal lactation cookies! This recipe from Jessica Merchant is actually really yummy. Grab your jug of water and a couple of cookies to drink / eat with every pumping session.

    4. Pump often!

  • I have personally been aiming to pump every four hours. If I don't have the time to pump or breastfeed, I try and stimulate a let down response just to trick my body into thinking that a baby needs to be fed that regularly. You can also "power pump" or cluster feed if you can manage to take a kind of nursing vacation with your baby. Basically you just pump on and off for an hour giving yourself 5-10 minutes breaks. Clear up your Netflix queue or catch up on some reading so you aren't just miserably staring at a wall during this process.

Now you have the tips but what about the must haves to make this process even easier?

  1. Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breastpump with Backpack
  2. Covered Goods Nursing cover: (Best nursing cover on the planet. Thin, breathable, full coverage)
  3. Pump 2 Nurse: Bags for refrigerating breast pump parts between pump sessions. (Who has time to clean at work?)
  4. Lilypadz reusable nursing pad
  5. Lansinoh milk storage bags
  6. Medela vehicle lighter adaptor for pumping on the road
  7. Lansinoh manual breast pump
  8. Nursing bras

I really would not have been able to work and breastfeed successfully without the above products and hopefully some mothers out there will find these products as helpful as I have.

Happy pumping =)

    Franklin Park Conservatory

It was 60 degrees this weekend in Columbus! A taste of spring just for the weekend. I am sure that everyones kids were itching to be out in the warm-ish weather and sunshine. For Saturday we decided to pay another visit to Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. This is a fantastic spot to take the kids come rain or shine but we took the opportunity of good weather to explore both inside and out. The Conservatory's indoor glass greenhouses include the Himalayan Mountain Biome, Rainforest Biome, Desert Biome, Pacific Island Water Garden, and the Dorothy M. Davis Showhouse. While perusing over 400 species of plants, you will also notice vibrant glass artwork from Dale Chihuly. Weather permitting, you can stroll the beautiful outdoor gardens within the 88-acres of Franklin Park.

This is a fantastic place to take the kids in the winter or rainy weather to get them out of the house and still give them the outdoor ambience. Being fairly new to the city I was completely unaware of the variety of events that they are constantly hosting. Their preschool program is every Thursday from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Children aged 3-5 get to experience story time, crafts, tours, and other activities. Our family can't wait for Blooms & Butterflies Opening Day on March 12th. There will be Dr. Seuss stories and songs from Seussical the Musical. Not to mention, butterflies!!! Check out all their amazing events here: http://www.fpconservatory.org/The-Experience/Events/For-Families

Want to really knock the kids out for nap time? Let them run around the outdoor gardens and play in the playground! Very, very, toddler friendly which I was a big fan of.

A Moms Valentines Day With Kids

Valentine's Day. Yes it's a fake holiday that Hallmark probably invented but when you have kids it's so much fun! Honestly, I pretty much use every possible holiday as an excuse to go out of my way to bake or craft something with the kids. I inevitably get in over my head and stay up until 3 am finishing these quarter started projects, but I still enjoy the satisfaction of another holiday spent with my youngins' and hopefully we have solidified memories for years to come. I want my children to look back on their childhood and remember all the birthday parties, desserts, and art projects we made together. Of course they probably won't remember the specifics but to have that general feeling of happiness and magic when you think back to being a kid is just so important. I always remember my mother baking the cakes and cupcakes for our birthdays or family events and I also remember that there was always a celebration for our birthday and major holidays no matter how big or small. Now that I am a mom, I know that there are more tears and stress involved than I ever imagined. It all seems so small and inconsequential until you see the joy on those little faces and you know it was all worth it. They are just kids who get excited about everything and I love to do anything to maintain that constant state of excitement and wonder.

The awesome thing about being a mother in this day and age is that Pinterest exists. I am so NOT artistic and creative and I love the abundance of ideas available at my fingertips. Michelle at www.craftymorning.com had super cute monkey valentines we made out of the kids handprints. If there are two things kids love, it is smearing themselves in paint, and monkeys. With three kids under three, the best art projects for us involve handprints and footprints. I also cut out a ton of hearts in various colors for them to glue on construction paper and make things like a love caterpillar and cat. And who are all these valentines for?! Cousins and grandparents of course! And the kids get to have the "exciting" experience of mailing them out themselves. Plus, this gives me a couple years of perfecting my mommy skills before I have to make a gazillion for classmates. Fingers crossed for small class sizes. Check out my V-day Pinterest board for the specifics.

On to the baked goods! I am STILL burned out from Thanksgiving / Christmas baking and could not bring myself to go crazy for this holiday. I have wandered into the magical world of no-bake goods and we made heart shaped, chocolate covered, oreo truffles. Basically just involved crushing a whole package of oreos, mixing the crumbs with cream cheese, rolling out a slab of the concotion and cutting out hearts to be dipped in melted white chocolate. We also made heart shaped rice krispies and added some food dye. Super easy, took about an hour to make both.
